Child dies from drowning at Portland city pool, parks bureau says
A child died from drowning at an outdoor public pool in Northeast Portland, the parks bureau said Wednesday, marking the first fatal swimming accident at a city-run aquatic center in nearly four decades.
The episode occurred Friday evening at Montavilla Pool on Northeast Glisan Street and 82nd Avenue when a young girl was found unresponsive in the water, Portland Parks & Recreation said in a brief statement. Temperatures had topped 90 degrees in Portland earlier in the day.
Lifeguards performed rescue breathing and CPR before paramedics arrived to take over, according to a 911 call. Paramedics then rushed the girl to a hospital, and she died Monday, according to the bureau.
Parks officials did not disclose the name or age of the child “out of respect for her family,” the statement said. Mark Ross, a bureau spokesperson, told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Wednesday that two lifeguards were on duty when the girl was spotted just before the pool closed to the public for the night.
